Liver is one of the most
vital organs of our body. If it fails, the person will soon die, on the other
other hand, even if 75% of it is diseased or donated, the healthy left-over
cells will multiply and regenerate the rest of the organ.
Some of the main functions
of the liver include storing vitamins, iron and sugar, helping provide energy
for the body; releasing bile (that helps with the digestion process) and
cleaning blood of harmful substances, among other things. So it is safe to say
that if the liver stops functioning in a healthy manner, the general health of
the patient suffers terribly.
In acute cases like cancer
outside the liver, alcohol abuse and septic infections, a person needs to
undergo a liver transplant to survive- which is a vital surgery and requires an
expert to perform the procedure. This was the reason Preeti Ventakraman called
us up in panic earlier this month.
Her husband, who used to be an alcoholic,
needed a liver transplant. She told us that even though he had not touched
alcohol in months, the doctor had told them that years of alcohol abuse had
taken a toll on her husband's liver and a transplant was their only option.
