The Urinary system in a human
being's body is made up of kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. As vital as
each of these organs are to the renal system, Kidneys pay a major role in
excreting bodily wastes like urea and ammonium and are also responsible for
maintaining a healthy blood pressure. The kidneys also work as a natural filter
for the blood. If one's kidneys aren't healthy, its needless to say, their
bodies will not be able to excrete unwanted and toxic substances, which is
gravely harmful for the health.
The term Nephrology comes from the Greek word
Nephro, that stands for Kidneys. Hence, Nephrology is a branch of medicine that
deals with the study of Kidney diseases and the specialist dealing in these
diseases is referred to as Nephrologist.
Some of the most common kidney diseases
include Alport Syndrome (a disease that mainly affects young men and is a
genetic disorder), Fabry disease (where a substance called GL-3 is accumulated
in blood vessels and causes damage to the brain and the kidneys) and Diabetic
Nephropathy (this is caused when diabetes causes extreme damage to the kidneys.
